What is dualism and why am I reading about it?

Well, a quick browse through "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" brought up a contrast of Zen with dualism. And now in order to proceed any further, I had to know what dualism is.

Enter Google.

So dualism, as you might guess, is a philosophical idea -- or a school of thought, if you may -- that postulates that the mind and the body are separate entities. Several renowned scientists have mulled over the idea of duality, one of the most famous being mathematician Rene Descartes. He came to believe strongly that the intangible mind (and consciousness in general) is separate from the spatially existing body, and that the mysterious (at least at that point in history) pineal gland in the brain was the interface between the two entities. It was later discovered (rather recently actually) that the purpose of the pineal gland is to secrete the hormone melatonin that regulates sleep cycles.
