INDIA –THE PROBLEM IN A GIST
BIENG a concerned youth , I have always been concerned about my country’s welfare , the problems faced by my country and by my fellowmen , the current political scenario, our economy, the emergence of terrorism and the list goes on.
For a while I have tried to find out the main problem faced by our country , whereas I could list numerous problems faced by different people , living in different regions such as terrorism faced by people of KASHMIR, water crisis faced by people of MAHARASHTRA,,riots faced by people of GUJRATand power crisis which affect the life of every DELHITE , I could not keep my finger on a common problem faced by the country as a one. I tried to come up with an answer and tried to find various options .Could the main problem be terrorism , could it be corruption , could it be the GREAT INDIAN POLITICS, could it be our relation with PAKISTAN , could it be the population or is it the unemployment.
WHILE these were serious issues, they were not problems that affected the country as a whole.
So what was the main problem? I tried finding out the answer and came to the conclusion that THERE WAS NO COMMON PROBLEM FACED BY INDIA AS ONE NATION, which in itself is the biggest problem our country faces.
While water crisis effected some regions of INDIA, others had to deal with problem of floods and in that way we are not able to empathize with each other’s problems. So is the geography and topography of INDIA responsible for this central problem? No geography could not be a factor as these kind of problems are also prevalent in other parts of the world like AUSTRALIA AND THE U.S.A ..So if geography is not a factor , then what is? The factor responsible is our “ATTITUDE” .
I have a theory (to which many may not agree ) , that INDIA was never meant to be one nation and also INDIA-PAKISTAN partition was a blessing in disguise.
Since , time immemorial INDIA faced the problem of unity , there were conflicts between states , kingdoms and princely states. Disunity amongst INDIANS is also evident from our freedom struggle and I sincerely believe that it was because of THE BRITISH that INDIA became one nation or else it would have disintegrated into different princely states who would be engaged in perpetual wars and INDIA’S condition would have been the same as many countries of the middle-east.Hence INDIA WAS A NATION NOT MEANT TO BE.
BUT, by luck or bad luck INDIA IS A NATION . But irrespective of this fact the attitude of many people has’nt changed since the olden days , a person living DELHI would address himself as a NORTH –INDIAN and one living in KARNATAKA as SOUTH-INDIAN . Also, these individuals would have communication problem amongst themselves and would find each others food , culture and language alien (and this is irrespective of the fact that they live in the same country).
It is said that INDIANS are marvelous as individuals but are not good as team players, this I believe is due to the fact that there is no sense of belonging amongst each other, that is why the so called NORTH-INDIAN is not able to empathize with the problems of the so called SOUTH-INDIAN.
We as individuals never work or feel like working as a team and hence never set common goals for our nation, and when the government tries to set goals ,we are least interested and rather criticize it believing that it is to gain political mileage that these plans are formulated. As individuals we have all the wrong priorities, while we will talk very ebulliently about issues like HINDUTVA and JEHAD, we are virtually scared to take up and discuss issues like the growing population, illiteracy, poverty , corruption etc.
I ‘AM a great admirer of journalists like VIR SANGHVI ( who is the most distinguished amongst others) and have the great respect for them , but after reading their articles I cannot help but imagine how cynical we are as individuals and how we have mastered the art of criticizing even the flawless. Some of the journalists would write tirades about certain policies formulated by the government (either the plan or it’s execution) while some write accolades about ministers like MR. LALOO PRASAD YADAV and yet nobody talks of reform or gives any constructive suggestion.
Politics on the other hand has become a refuge for dacoits , murderers, criminals, the unqualified and the uneducated and this is because of our ignorant and laid back attitude and even then nobody is ready to take the blame .We can blame the government continuously for mismanagement and poor administration believing that even we could have done a better job in governing a country of 1 billion plus population .
THE political arena has become a circus show , and like clowns the politicians entertain us with their bohemian code of conduct , there hilarious speeches and the extravagant rallies .And when one amongst them tries to become serious and bring in a reform , something that MR.JAGMOHAN tried to do when he was the urban development minister., he becomes hated by all and is not considered a part of the fun circus anymore and gets transferred to another place by other clowns and after that is done we can again go back and become spectators to our doom.
What is more disheartening to see is the ignorant attitude of the people .Many may argue by saying that a common man has no say in bringing about an administrative reform and hence ignorance has crept into people’s attitude .But,I believe that this current political situation has also arisen because we are so ignorant and this can be reinforced by comparing and analyzing the number voters from amongst the people of the so called enlightened and educated middle and rich class people to the lesser fortunate classes .We (the so called educated class) will criticize the leaders and their policy but,will not vote and choose the right leaders , we will curse the government for running a poor show and constantly refer to the fact that INDIA is still not a developed economy whereas most of us don’t even know about the governments aim of 8 per cent GDP growth over the next 10 years .
I sincerely believe that half the battle is won if we learn to accept the blame and then try to take matters in our own hand and the most important thing is to learn to work as a team.INDIA has the the largest , the most precious asset i.e. a workforce of 1 billion plus people .
The need of the hour is to act and not preach, let us make a pledge of converting our country into a superpower , let us take a pledge of making INDIA a force to reckon with , let’s accept the blame ,let’s not plead for sympathy and rather command respect, let’s be team players, let’s stand united as one ,let’s stand united AS INDIA.
