Abstract Expressionism
Franz Kline painted "Mahoning" on the left. Mahoning is the name of a county in PA that was a center for steel production. This painting is supposed to invoke an existentialist emotion in the viewer. The painting is not black on white but "white and black". Observing this piece of art is supposed to convey the Sartrian concept of existence before essence. I view it as a koan.
